Placenta previa occurs when the placenta is implanted in the lower segment of the uterus instead of the upper part. It therefore lies in front of the baby as it comes to descend the birth canal at the onset of labour. The baby cannot pass down the canal without dislodging the placenta, which interupts its own blood supply. This dangerous condition can be diagnosed well ahead of delivery by ultrasound. Early symptoms include episodes of bleeding, with bright red blood, which may occur after sexual intercourse. Bed rest is usually recommended until week 37 at which time the baby will be delivered by Caesarean section. Hope this response helps.
